Why local govt should engage with openData?

Do you need convincing that releasing geospatial data is the right thing to do for local govt?

Watch this engaging talk from a recent talk on TED to find out why?

You will be convinced, so check out our 'toolkit' page for resources available to help you start the journey towards openData ....

from our toolkit page ....

Releasing Council Geospatial Data

Creative Commons licensing can be used to release the bulk of Geospatial data. Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 New Zealand License (CC BY 3.0) is the most appropriate licence to use.

Prior to release, the data needs to be checked to ensure:

  • It belongs to the council who intends to give it out
  • It can be provided
  • It has quality metadata
The issuing council is responsible for performing this check. If it doesn’t meet these criteria it cannot be provided.

Justification for this decision
New Zealand has a strong history of open and transparent government that is internationally recognised.  One of the pillars of open and transparent government is open government data and information.
Evidence suggests that opening up this information for re-use has considerable and widespread benefits to government, industry and the public.  At the same time, technological and cultural advances also make it cheaper and easier to do.
A number of resources have been referred to in arriving at the above standpoint. These include:
NZGOAL Advice on using the Creative Commons licenses – Legal opinion from A J Park, 14 April 2011

Kids in schools learning about GIS

Recently the NZ Geospatial Office, who convene a Geospatial Capability Committee, held a High Country hi-tech Virtual Field Trip for schools introducing GIS concepts to schools and capturing the kids interest in attending with a competition about drones.  It sounds like a successful trip.

You might like to check out the videos on the LEARNZ Vimeo website - https://vimeo.com/album/2992001 including one with Jana Kaeppeler (GIS Officer at Mackenzie DC) entitled “Using GIS and sharing data” that shows students some of the common data layers that local government GIS/mapping applications typically use.  At the end it suggests that students check out their local council to see what online maps and GIS data they have.

You never know, a student near you might start asking about GIS data or careers in GIS!

By all means pass on the link to the site to people you know who have young people grappling about careers.

If you have any questions or comments, please contact Gill Lawrence, LG rep on the Geospatial Capability Committee. (Contact email: gill dot lawrence at waikatoregion dot govt dot nz )

Consents survey closes this Friday (5th June)

Just a reminder that our consents survey closes this Friday (5th June).
We have received an 18% response rate so far, but we were hoping we can do better than that.

You can see below which councils sent us a survey, many thanks!

Can you please spare 5 minutes to complete the survey by this Friday and or encourage the other councils in your area to do the same.

Let’s improve local government consents data, your help is needed.

The Local Government Geospatial Alliance is conducting this important survey to assess the state of spatial consents data in local government. We want your feedback so that we can get a picture of spatial consents data in local government and understand common issues. With this information we hope to be able to help resolve some issues and perhaps work towards building a nationally consistent dataset.

The survey covers a wide range of topics in relation to consents and consents data, we don't have email addresses for everyone in your organisation who knows about these areas, so could you please forward this email on to people in your organisation who know about building consents, resource consents, data and spatial data. We don't mind receiving multiple copies of the survey the same organisation.

We are wanting to take fast action in this area so could you please have the survey completed by Friday, 5 June 2015.
We really value your help and if you would like a copy of the results or have further involvement in this initiative, you can leave your email address in the section at the end of the survey.
